MOZART!
The musical
Musical by Michael Kunze & Sylvester Levay Production: Harry Kupfer Stage Sets: Hans Schavernoch
World Premiere on 2 October 1999 in the Theater an der Wien Final Performance on 7 May 2001 419 Performances, approximately 420,000 Patrons. The musical MOZART! is based on the life story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The focal point of the story is an inspired artist who must free himself from his tyrannical but loving father and his system of control in order to develop as a musician and a person. Above all, in Mozart’s struggles for independence, Michael Kunze depicts a drama about growing up. A drama with which we are all familiar. But it was more difficult for Mozart than for most people. After all, his father and an amazed world described him as childhood perfection personified. The cute child made of porcelain, which he allegedly was, continued to pursue him like a shadow when he grew up. In the musical MOZART! this is what actually happens. We see two Mozarts: the person Wolfgang and the genius Amadé. Little Amadé is omnipresent in the life of the adult Mozart. MOZART! – the musical aims to release the cliché of the historical figure from the sentimentalising and idolisation, to discover the figure afresh from a modern standpoint.
